JUVENTUS have made initial contact with Chelsea over a move to sign Gary Cahill.
The Serie A champions are in desperate need of a new centre-back, having lost Leonardo Bonucci to AC Milan. And sources close to the Bianconeri have told us they are now targeting Cahill, having been alerted to the fact Antonio Conte is unsure how big of a part he will play this season.
The arrival of Antonio Rudiger from Roma means one of the last season’s colossal backline is likely to have to drop to the bench.
With David Luiz and Cesar Azpilicueta so impressive, it is likely to be the former Bolton man who misses out, as Conte considers his captain the most “dispensable”.
And Cahill has endured a nightmare start to the season, earning a red card on the opening day defeat to Burnley.
It has been an uncharacteristically frustrating summer on the transfer front for Juventus.
Having lost Bonucci, a player Conte was desperate to bring to Stamford Bridge, they have failed to land either of their top targets in Jerome Boateng and Diego Godin as replacements. While they have even failed to secure deals for Eliaquim Mangala or Ezquiel Garay.
Juventus are keen on a loan deal for Cahill, but would be willing to part with around £16.5million to land the 31-year-old.
Conte still hopeful of a late spending spree, which would include the arrival of Dutch central defender Virgil van Dijk from Southampton.
