LEICESTER star Riyad Mahrez was reportedly hoping to join Manchester United on transfer deadline day.
The Daily Star claims the winger left Algeria’s World Cup squad in the hopes of securing a dream move to Old Trafford. Mahrez was strongly linked with the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal during the transfer window.
But his representatives were apparently angling for a United switch after Jose Mourinho’s move for Ivan Perisic failed to materialise.
Mahrez was aware that the Special One was hunting for an out-and-out winger in his bid to create a squad worthy of winning the title.
But Leicester didn’t receive any bids for the former Premier League Player of the Year, instead selling Danny Drinkwater to Chelsea for £35million.
The only club to bid for Mahrez over the summer was Roma, who offered £31m at one stage.
However, the Foxes rejected the figure and demanded an eye-watering £50m for their key man. Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain were also linked, with Mahrez spotted in the French capital earlier in the week.
But he will now be staying put with Leicester until January at least, although it remains unclear whether he will continue to seek a move away from the King Power Stadium.
