England are on the plane to Russia but bored fans celebrate more

HARRY KANE grabbed an injury-time winner — but it could not paper over the cracks of a dire display.
Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions can now look forward to jetting off to the World Cup finals in Russia next summer. But fans at Wembley were so bored during the 94 minutes before skipper Kane’s goal against Slovenia they made paper planes and threw them on the pitch.
It was the third crucial injury-time goal during the Group F campaign after Adam Lallana’s winner in Slovakia and Kane’s point-saving strike in Scotland.
Hero Kane said: “It feels amazing to get there. We got there in the end and that’s all that matters. It was frustrating at times out there, we had to be patient.
“They were getting tired in the last ten minutes and we created a few opportunities. “It’s no easy feat nowadays. There’s some top countries around the world struggling to qualify so to qualify with one game to go, we’re all delighted and that’s job done for us.”
Southgate said: “I think this team has potential but we have a hell of a lot of work to do.
“On the back of the Euros there was a change of coach and a lot of difficulty in this campaign. But we are there so now we must build and improve all the time.
“We weren’t quite as sharp with the ball, but we stuck at it and it’s not a coincidence if you keep scoring late goals.
“It shows we push right until the end.” The Three Lions may have finished top in Group F before Sunday’s final game in Lithuania.
But they rode their luck at times with keeper Joe Hart making a brave second-half block and Slovenia claiming an early penalty after Hart appeared to bring down Josip Ilicic.
The England No 1 said: “The guys were brilliant today. We wore them down, it was difficult for the crowd, we appreciate them coming, it was a difficult game. “To have Harry doing that in the last minute and Kyle Walker to whip it in for him is a big feeling. We’re really happy.
“Regardless of personal achievements it is important we smile tonight. England have qualified for a World Cup — it’s a big deal.”
Southgate was full of praise for his keeper and added: “It’s big saves at big times and it’s all about his experience.
“We have to get better but that’s for tomorrow. Tonight the country goes to the World Cup which is fantastic.”
