Besiktas 1 Monaco 1: Cenk Tosun’s strike leaves Turkish giants on the brink of Champions League last 16 qualification

BESIKTAS narrowly missed out on the chance to book their spot in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Besiktas, who had won their opening three games in the group, could still go through with two matches spare - provided RB Leipzig beat PortoMeanwhile, underachieving Monaco move one step closer to an early exit after securing only their second point from their four group stage fixtures. The French side were dealt an early blow when Arsenal target Thomas Lemar was subbed off the field after 26 minutes with an injury. Against the run of play, Lopes put Monaco ahead before the interval with a curling 20-yard effort. Eight minutes after the break, Besiktas were awarded a penalty after Jorge hacked down Ricardo Quaresma in the box.
Tosun stepped up and fired a thumping strike into the top-left corner of the net to equalise for the home side. Quaresma missed a golden opportunity to double his sides tally just moments later after taking
advantage of a defensive mix-up from Monaco. The 34-year-old beat Subasic, but missed the target and sent his strike way over the woodwork. Oğuzhan Özyakup saved the day for Besiktas in the dying stages of the game with a sublime goal-line clearance to clear a headed effort from Andrea Raggi.
Both sides had chances to win it after that, with Keita Balde squandering a golden opportunity for the visitors in added time.
