Chelsea’s defeat to Roma savaged by Steven Gerrard as he questions Antonio Conte and Blues’ leaky defence

STEVEN GERRARD has torn into Chelsea’s performance against Roma this evening, labelling it “the worst” he’s ever seen under Antonio Conte.
The Blues were taught a lesson as their manager returned to Italy for the first time since leaving Juventus.
Steven Gerrard claims Chelsea's defeat to Roma was one of the worst he's seen under Antonio Conte
Stephan El Shaarawy had Roma ahead with less than a minute on the clock before capitalising on Antonio Rudiger’s mistake to double the lead. Diego Perotti also netted a beauty as Chelsea’s defence parted like the Red Sea. And it could have been even more for the home side if Thibaut Courtois hadn’t pulled off a magnificent save. It’s Conte’s joint-heaviest defeat since arriving at Stamford Bridge, and Gerrard feels the tactician needs to quickly stop his defence from leaking needless goals. Gerrard told BT Sport: “That’s up there with the worst I’ve seen of Chelsea since he’s come in, defensively all over the place.
“They haven’t had a settled back four for ten, 12 games. They seem to be changing it week in, week out. “He doesn’t seem to know his strongest three, what positions they should be in. Gary Cahill’s one minute left centre-back, then he’s right centre-back.
“The Chelsea sides over the years are always strong defensively, they know what they’re doing, they’re all in the same positions and it’s a solid machine. At the moment it doesn’t look nowhere near that.”
