But Gerardo Martino was quickly replaced by Edgardo Bauza, and Messi was coaxed back out of the wilderness.
The 30-year-old has revealed he was not comfortable with how he behaved during the controversial period.
However, Messi now claims he is more at peace with life as Argentina’s main man, adding that he can now deflect criticism easier than before.
Messi told DIRECTV Sports: “It was a decision I made in the heat of the moment, but I was embarrassed to say I wanted to come back. “Bauza and my team-mates made everything easier for me to return.
“At 30 years old, I enjoy it in a different way and much more than before. “I take advantage of every moment, both on and off the pitch. I am experiencing this moment with the national team in a different way.
“I am more relaxed today. When they criticise me, I experience it differently.”
