Arsenal clash against Chelsea in Carabao Cup semi-final to have VAR technology enabled for first time
BOTH legs of Arsenal's Carabao Cup semi-final with Chelsea will feature video assistant referees (VAR).
The EFL has confirmed that the officials will have access to video replays for controversial or game changing incidents.
VAR will be used for the first time in the Carabao Cup when Chelsea host the Gunners on January 10.
It will then be implemented for the second-leg and during the final at Wembley on February 25.
Serie A
and
Bundesliga
already use the system, and FIFA president Gianni Infantino is hoping that the technology will improve the 2018 World Cup.
The EFL have opted to trial it for the London derby, rather than Bristol City's meeting with Manchester City. This will not be the first time that video assistant referees will be used in the English game.
It was trialled during England's international friendlies against Germany and Brazil at Wembley in November. But it was not called into action at any point.
Bristol City
will make the trip to the Etihad on Tuesday, January 9, to face
Pep Guardiola's
men. The Championship side heroically made it into the semi-finals with a shock win against Manchester United.
Man City
scraped their way through to the semi-final after they narrowly beat Leicester City on penalties.
Arsenal saw off West Ham to secure their semi-final spot, while
Chelsea
secured a late win against
Bournemouth
.
All four semi-final matches will be broadcast on Sky Sports.
