Nigeria hit by clubs' reluctance

Shehu Abdullahi

Umar Aminu and Shehu Abdullahi are two players Nigeria would have loved to have at the impending U23 Afcon, but won't.
The duo will not feature for at this month’s tournament after their clubs refused to let them go. Aminu's Turkish club Osmanlispor and Shehi's C.F. UniĆ£o are within their rights to do so because the U23 Afcon is not a Fifa sanctioned tournament.
However, their presence would have been key, considering the tournament's finalists will represent Africa at next year's Olympics in Brazil.
Aminu came to prominence after doing well with Nigeria’s Dream Team VI, which finished third, at the 2015 All Africa Games. But his club were furious following a knee injury at the AAG, which sidelined him for several weeks.
That fact may have been a key reason why they budged on allowing his departure to assist his country in Senegal.
The U23 Afcon starts on November 28.
