West Ham bid for William Carvalho

WEST HAM’S club-record bid for William Carvalho has stalled over his £40 million price tag.
The Hammers had hoped an offer of £36m would be enough to capture the highly-rated Portugal midfielder but the deal has hit the buffers over a price hike. West Ham boss Slaven Bilic was optimistic of getting his man in time to make an immediate debut at Southampton on Saturday but that now looks doomed.
A club insider said: “It’s only 50/50 now. They are holding out.”
Bilic wants Carvalho to prop up his midfield particularly after seeing his team overwhelmed in a 4-0 defeat at Manchester United on Sunday.
West Ham will go back to the negotiating table and have not yet given up on landing their man.
There were also positive notes from a solid performance by rookie Declan Rice in the West Ham midfield on Sunday.
However they are desperate to bolster their squad to avoid another awful start to the season. Porto midfielder Danilo Pereira has emerged as a key target should they fail in their attempts to bring Carvalho to the London Stadium.
Like the 25-year-old, Pereira was also part of the Portuguese side that won Euro 2016, however he didn’t start in the final against France.
West Ham need to add to their side after they sold Sofiane Feghouli to Turkish giants Galatasaray for a mere £3.9million.
The East Londoners face Southampton at St Mary’s on Saturday.
