LAST YEAR’S semi-finalists Monaco were held to a 1-1 draw at RB Leipzig as they struggled without their former stars.
Without the likes of last season’s sensations Kylian Mbappe, Bernardo Silva and Benjamin Mendy, the French champions struggled for creativity in the final third. They found themselves 1-0 down on 33 minutes when Emil Forsberg broke the offside trap before slamming the ball past Diego Benaglio.
But just a minute later they were level through Youri Tielemans’ first goal for the club.
The keeper failed to deal with a loose ball in the box and the midfielder reacted quickest to poke the ball home.
In the other game in Group D Besiktas stunned Porto with an impressive 3-1 victory in Portugal.
Talisca headed the visitors in front on 13 minutes before Dusko Tosic scored an own goal to bring the two teams level.
Cenk Tosun then scored a screamer from distance on 28 minutes before former Liverpool man Ryan Babel countered to hand Besiktas all three points. In Manchester City's group Shakhtar Donetsk pulled off an impressive 2-1 victory over underdogs Napoli.
The Ukrainians went ahead through Taison before Argentine forward Facundo Ferreyra doubled their advantage.
Arkadiusz Milik gave the visitors a glimmer of hope from the spot but Shakhtar stood firm despite late Napoli pressure to move joint top of the group.
Slovenian side Maribor scored late to manage a 1-1 draw with Spartak Moscow but the game was marred by crowd violence both inside and out of the ground.
