Last season’s third-place finishers in Ligue 1 won 5-1 in Belgium. Meanwhile, Arsenal weren’t the only side to see fans take the centre stage as Nice‘s domestic rivals Marseille had to contend with fare-yielding Konyaspor supporters.
It didn’t matter, however, as Adil Rami’s goal secured a 1-0 win.
Ciro Immobile scored his first-ever goal in Europe as Lazio staged a late comeback to win 3-2 away at Vitesse Arnhem, to make Group K interesting.
The other match in Arsenal’s group saw Red Star Belgrade and BATE Borisov draw 1-1 in Serbia.
Elsewhere, one of the most anticipated games of the night was the Group J clash between Hertha Berlin and Athletic Bilbao finished 0-0.
Milan won 5-1 away at Austria Vienna and then saw Group D rivals Rijeka lose 2-1 at home to AEK Athens. Heavyweights Villarreal beat Astana 3-1 and Slavia Prague beat Maccabi Tel Avivi 1-0 in the Group A's other game.
Fellow La Liga side Real Sociedad stormed to a 4-0 win over Rosenborg in Group L.
But there was a shock in Germany as Hoffenheim were beaten 2-1 by Braga — Istanbul Basaksehir and Ludogorets drew 0-0 in Group C's other contest.
Zenit St Peterburg were the night's other big winners as they hammered Vardar 5-0, to make Group L a clear two-way tussle. Manchester United fans may remember Zorya Luhansk from last season's Europa League run — the Ukrainians lost 2-0 at home to Ostersunds in Group J.
In Group I, alongside Marseille, Vitoria Guimaraes and Red Bull Salzburg drew 1-1.
Group B saw Dynamo Kiev beat Skenderbey Korce 3-1 and Young Boys play out a 1-1 draw with Partizan Belgrade.
While there were no goals in Group F as matches Zlin and Sheriff and Copenhagen and Lokomotiv Moscow finished 0-0.
