UEFA have charged Roma with "racist behaviour" after monkey chants were heard during the Chelsea clash on Wednesday night.
The Serie A giants will sit in a hearing on November 16, following their thrilling 3-3 draw in the Champions League at Stamford Bridge. In a statement, Uefa said: "Disciplinary proceedings have been opened following the Uefa Champions League group stage match between Chelsea FC and AS Roma (3-3), played on 18 October in England.
"Charges against AS Roma: Racist behaviour (monkey chants) - Art. 14 of the Disciplinary Regulations.
"This case will be dealt with by the Uefa Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on 16 November."
The chants were directed at Blues defender Antonio Rudiger, who has already spoken about racism in Italy being a "serious issue". The former Stuttgart and Roma ace claimed: "Racism is a serious issue here.
“Incidents like the ones with Benatia and me simply happen too often in this country and that is why something must happen now.
"When the Italian FA is not doing anything then Fifa must act.
"It is easy to come up with the ‘No to racism’ campaign but when you don’t do anything concrete then that does not help.” Roma fans had already clashed with police ahead of their team’s Champions League match against Chelsea in West London.
A number of them were seen throwing punches at uniformed police officers on High Street Kensington.
And the road was soon in total disarray as ten police vans pulled up at the scene to regain order.
The Roma fans were then "kettled" and eventually escorted to Earl's Court at around 6pm.
