Liverpool are the highest scoring British team in Champions League group stage history
LIVERPOOL bagged 23 goals from six group stage games as they breezed in the last 16 of the Champions League.
And this sublime scoring record makes Jurgen Klopp’s side the highest scoring British team in group stage history.
The previous record was held by Manchester United, who boasted 21 group stage strikes.
Only French giants
Paris Saint-Germain
scored more goals than the Merseyside outfit in the competition group stages this year, with 25.
After only conceding six goals, Jurgen Klopp’s men topped group E with a goal difference of 17.
Liverpool scored seven more than
Chelsea
, eight more than
Tottenham
, nine more than
Manchester City
and 11 more than
Manchester United
. The Reds put seven past Spartak Moscow on Wednesday night to improve on their impressive goal tally.
Philippe Coutinho
bagged a hat-trick, and
Roberto Firmino
,
Sadio Mane
and
Mohamed Salah
made the scoresheet. Brazilian ace Firmino is now the second highest scorer in the competition with six goals, behind Cristiano Ronaldo with nine.
Liverpool
scored 18 goals on their way to winning the 2004/05 Champions League, so they will enter the knockout stages oozing with confidence.
