Manchester Uniteds hopes of signing Gareth Bale have been dashed

Real Madrid are banking on Bale to return from last week’s injury setback to save their season – and a successful comeback will make him off-limits to United.
United are also unlikely to splash out on the 28-year-old if injury wrecks his season in La Liga.
Former Old Trafford boss David Moyes attempted to sign Bale in 2013 when he eventually moved to the Bernabeu for a world-record £86million.
Bale has since won the Champions League three times in four seasons and reached the European Championship semi-final with Wales. But his latest injury setback was a calf problem aggravated in midweek on his comeback against Fuenlabrada.
Madrid’s title hopes were dented again on Saturday night. The Galacticos, minus Bale, were held to a goalless draw against Athletic Bilbao at San Mames Stadium.
Zinedine Zidane’s men failed to make the most of their golden opportunity to get back into the La Liga title race. After Spanish rivals Barca drew 2-2 at home to Celta Vigo earlier in the day, Madrid would have been able to close the gap.
Madrid have now failed to score in back-to-back La Liga away games for the first time since September 2011.
Los Blancos will now also be without Sergio Ramos, yet again, after the defender saw red in the late stages of the fixture.
