Was That A Miss Or What

Junior Malanda
It was described as “one of the biggest misses ever seen” by the Bundesliga match day commentator when Bayern Munich beat Wolfsburg 2-1.
With Bayern leading 2-1, just after Ivan Olic had pulled one back for Wolfsburg with a cracker that left Manuel Neuer clutching at thin air, the easiest chance to equalise fell to Junior Malanda in the 79th minute.
Malanda’s initial shot came off the crossbar and he made a great follow up but the final touch was just appalling. All he needed to do was poke the ball into the net, but he pulled his effort wide just inches away from the goal line.
There have been a number of embarrassing misses in world football over the years. Malanda missed a sitter, one that was easier to score than to miss. Borussia Dortmund forward Jakub "Kuba" Blaszczykowski also once treated the fans to a comic miss against Freiburg. After being played through by Robert Lewandowski, the Polish player found himself in front of an empty net and all he needed was to pop the ball into the net. What followed was just a shocker: Who will forget that Fernando Torres horror miss against Manchester United which TV analyst and Sportsmail columnist Jamie Redknapp described as follows. 'To use a golfing term, it was almost like a yip.' Torres rounded United goalkeeper David de Gea in the 83rd minute only to slice his shot wide. Former Nigeria striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni missed a sitter as well against South Korea in the 2010 Fifa World Cup. Yakubu was about four yards away from the empty goal but still pushed the ball wide of the left post to keep South Korea ahead 2-1.
