REAL MADRID have made it two disappointing home draws in a row to kick off the season as Zinedine Zidane’s rotation policy appears to have backfired.
With Cristiano Ronaldo suspended, the Frenchman left Isco and Gareth Bale on the bench — and saw his side drop more points. A defensive mix-up involving stand-in goalkeeper Kiko Casilla allowed Ivi Lopez to open the scoring in the 12th minute.
Things got worse for Zidane as he lost Karim Benzema to injury, and his replacement Bale continued to struggle in front of goal.
Lucas Vazquez got them on level terms when he headed in Toni Kroos‘ corner on 36 minutes — but they will certainly see it as his two points dropped.
Moments after replacing Benzema, Bale was put clean through put saw his effort saved.
And the Welshman missed another good chance to score the winner when he headed wide late on.
With a 5-1 aggregate victory over Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup, Real Madridwere expected to romp to a second-consecutive La Liga title. However, they have picked up just five points from their first three games, and only two at home.
It got worse still as Marcelo became the third senior player to be dismissed in the opening five matches of the season when he was sent off for a petulant kick out late on.
Ronaldo is still suspended following his five-match ban for the pushing the referee in the Spanish Super Cup first leg.
And Sergio Ramos was inevitably dismissed in the opening game of the season.
