BARCELONA star Javier Mascherano has revealed he wants to leave the club and return to River Plate.
The 33-year-old has been a sporadic figure in Spain this season, and is open to leaving the Nou Camp as he struggles for game time under Ernesto Valverde.
Mascherano has a contract with the La Liga club until 2019, but could leave in the near future after claiming he has unfinished business at the club he spent between 2003-2005. Speaking to TNT Sports, the ex- Liverpool ace said: "Honestly, I still feel that there's a chapter in my career to be dedicated to River.
"What happens is that the big problem of talking about River is that, in my case, I do not want to be a prisoner of my words.
"I do not want to be saying that in December I will return, or in June. And then if it does not happen, what should I do? Was I lying? "I do not want to be saying that in December I will return, or in June. And then if it does not happen, what should I do? Did I say a lie.
"I speak regularly with (River president Rodolfo) D'Onofrio but, honestly, it's been a year since we spoke about going back.
"Before yes, I consulted with Enzo. But a year ago we did not talk about that topic. We talk often because I have a very good relationship with him and with Enzo." The two-time Champions League winner also insisted that his next move will not be motivated by money. "I have kids and they also have to be considered. It's not an excuse, but I have my reasons. Right now, I have no idea what I am going to do. I have no idea what I'm going to do in January."
A move in the transfer window remains unlikely as the Catalan club sit top of La Liga, with Barca unbeaten in 11 games, drawing just once.
Mascherano has featured in just six top-flight matches this season, with Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti the preferred centre-back partnership.
