HUGO LLORIS says Spurs must forget about winning their first title for 57 years — and focus on finishing in the top four.
Successive away defeats at Manchester United and Arsenal mean Tottenham are now 11 points behind leaders Manchester City.
And skipper Lloris admits they must now consolidate their top-four spot. He said: “We’ve heard from outside that Tottenham plays for the title.
“But before we think about Manchester City, it’s important to stay in the top four. That is the main target, to remain consistent in the league.
"We have been in the top four for the last two years and need to carry on with that. To settle the club in this position and to gradually reduce the gap with the best.
“It’s our ambition to win the title, but we need to go step by step.” Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino could not hide his anger after again flopping against a title rival.
Poch was far from happy when it was pointed out that, since he took charge in 2014, Spurs have won just one of 17 games away to the so-called ‘big six’. He snapped: “If you are telling me we struggle against this type of team, that is your opinion. But no one was talking about these things when we beat Real Madrid.
“You are a good manager when you win but every single time you lose you are a disaster.”
Harry Kane and Dele Alli both struggled to make any impact before being subbed against Arsenal.
And once again Pochettino was forced to deny suggestions neither was fully fit after missing England’s friendlies with hamstring problems. He added: “I have said before I will not take risks with Dele or Harry.
“But if you haven’t scored after 75 minutes, you need to give an opportunity to other attacking players.”
Pochettino was raging at ref Mike Dean — disputing the free-kick which led to Arsenal’s opener and suggesting both goals were offside.
And he pointed out: “Mike was the same referee against Swansea who gave a handball when it was not and we lost two points that day because of it.”
