Michael Oliver appointed as Manchester derby referee ahead of weekend title battle

MICHAEL OLIVER has been chosen as the man-in-the-middle for Sunday's Manchester derby.
Oliver has had his fair share of controversy in this fixture. Michael Oliver will take charge of the Manchester derbyIn March last year he denied United a penalty at the end of the first half when Marcus Rashford was brought down by Martin Demichelis.
And in 2014 Oliver sent off Chris Smalling but reprieved City keeper Joe Hart when he went aggressively close to the referee with his head.
Recently Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp slammed Oliver for refusing to let him make a substitution prior to Chelsea's crucial equaliser at Anfield.
Groaned Klopp: "I was angry because we wanted to change the system but the ref didn't give us the opportunity. "I don't know what he thought in this moment, he told me something about taking too long, I don't understand it.
"How can we take too long? We didn't want to time waste, we wanted to change the system and that's why I was angry." But Oliver, 32, from Ashington, can take a bow for his handling of Everton's 4-0 hammering of West Ham last week.
In particular the way he handled himself in the build up to Wayne Rooney's wonder goal from his own half. For Oliver had a split second to leap out of the way of Rooney's shot and just about managed to.
Had the ball struck Oliver and not gone in, Rooney would have been denied his hat-trick and arguably the greatest goal of his career.
Oliver's assistants at Old Trafford will be Gary Beswick and Simon Bennett, with Jon Moss the fourth official.
