Manchester City want Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham

PEP GUARDIOLA is eyeing Toby Alderweireld as a long-term successor to Vincent Kompany.
Manchester City are among the Premier League giants monitoring the Belgium centre-back’s contract stand-off at TottenhamGuardiola and other top-flight managers believe Alderweireld, valued at £60million, is one of the best defenders in the Prem, with the Spaniard looking at his options in his backline.
The City boss tried to land Jonny Evans during the last window but could not complete a deal, with Eliaquim Mangala providing cover but allowed to leave for the right deal.
Kompany missed yesterday’s clash with Liverpool after a calf problem flared up on international duty.
The Etihad skipper has suffered injury hell in the last two seasons and only manged 11 league games in the last campaign.
Alderweireld has not agreed a new deal at Spurs yet, with his adviser Stijn Francis last week insisted “he deserves either a correct contract from Tottenham or a transfer”.
City are likely to make a move next summer if fresh terms with Spurs are not agreed. He has a contract with the north Londoners until 2020. “Football Leaks” claim a £25m release clause can be triggered at the end of next season, although Spurs denied the report when it was published.
But City will be among the clubs looking at his situation at the end of the campaign and whether a deal is sorted.
