Jose Mourinho representatives hold talks with PSG chiefs
JOSE MOURINHO has been sounded out by Paris Saint-Germain on being their next manager.
Contact was made between the French champions and
Mourinho
’s representatives.
It has been made clear that he is committed to
Manchester United
.
But big-spending
PSG
have left the offer open should things change.
Less than a month ago Mourinho
talked them up while saying he would not end his career at Manchester United
. Mourinho said: “At the moment in Paris there is something special.
“Magic, quality, youth, it’s fantastic.”
Mourinho later clarified the comments on not ending his career at United by saying no manager can last in a top job for as long as
Arsene Wenger
or
Sir Alex Ferguson
. The flirtation with PSG still raised eyebrows at Old Trafford — as will this approach.
It is not the first time they have attempted to get him, having tried to hijack his appointment at Old Trafford in summer 2016.
PSG’s sporting director Antero Henrique worked with Mourinho at Porto and will be seen by PSG as a key player in trying to land him.
Mourinho is nearly halfway through his three-year contract and United want to tie him down to a new one but there have been no negotiations so far.
The hierarchy believe Mourinho has the club back on track after the three years under
David Moyes
and
Louis van Gaal
.
Last season he won both the League Cup and Europa League which put the club back in the Champions League.
United have backed him to the tune of £300million in the transfer market. But he was unhappy at failing to land his fourth target this summer — Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic. Mourinho plans to spend big again both in January and next summer.
United sit second in the Prem, are in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup and all but through to the knockout stages of the Champions League.
Qatari-backed PSG dominate French football having won the last three titles. They also lead Ligue 1 this season by four points from Monaco.
But they have never passed the quarter-final stage of the Champions League — and see Mourinho as the man to change that having won it with Porto and Inter Milan.
